Wisdom On How To Handle What Looks Like Failure

Failure & Success Perspective

Recently, as I was pondering and writing about choosing easy whenever the path to a goal gets blocked, I found all sorts of inspirational wisdom on how to handle what looks like failure.

Here’s a short collection from some famous thinkers:

Winston Churchill:  "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."

Confucius:  “When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.”

James Joyce:  "Mistakes are the portals of discovery."

Harriet Beecher Stowe:  "Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn."

Thomas Edison: "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

Henry Ford:  "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal."

The Most Adaptable Will Survive

Several years ago, I was having a conversation with my highly-educated sister, who has 3 science degrees, about evolution and survival of species.  Yes, our conversations are often that geeky.  What can I say?  She set me straight about the theory of “survival of the fittest” by proving that the key to survival is not necessarily that the fittest will survive... it's that the most ADAPTABLE will survive.

White Birch TreesShe cited a classic example.  During the Industrial Revolution in England the white birch trees near factories often became gray from soot.  There was a species of moth that came in two color varieties, gray-speckled and white.  The white moths had the advantage of survival prior to the industrial revolution era because when they landed on the white birch trees, they were camouflaged to hide from bird predators.  When the trees became gray in color, the gray-speckled moths gained the advantage over the white ones.

The good news is that, unlike moths, we are able to consciously choose how we will adapt.  Yay!  And, in order to adapt, we must not see ourselves as victims of circumstances.

It pays to choose proactively how we will respond to our circumstances.  Surviving – and thriving – requires that you adapt or you will wither away… and, I mean wither away physically, emotionally and/or spiritually.

William Kamkwamba Harnesses the Wind And Builds A Future

TED:  At age 14, in poverty and famine, a Malawian boy built a windmill to power his family's home. Now at 22, William Kamkwamba, who speaks at TED, here, for the second time, shares in his own words the moving tale of invention that changed his life.

It's a simple message, but powerful and must be said over and over again until we all know this like we know that we need water to survive...

"Trust yourself and believe.  Whatever happens don't give up." - William Kamkwamba

Buddy Guy Mentors Young Bluesman Quinn Sullivan

Let's have some Friday fun! And why not get a little inspired while we're at it too?

In case you don't know this about me already, let me tell you... I LOVE the blues. Buddy Guy is one of my all time favorite bluesmen, and check out who he's been mentoring. Quinn Sullivan was 10 years old in this feature story from NBC's Today Show (video and link below). This year he turned 12 years old, and, by the way, he's still touring with Buddy Guy. They're doing a show in a Las Vegas next month.

Turn on your speakers and enjoy this delightful story about a young person with big dreams and big talent who's making his mark on the world. (4:38 minutes.)

And if you liked that, you might want to just sit back and watch/listen to the gig where Buddy "discovered" Quinn at age 8.

Big smile now ~ tapping my foot ~ enjoying the jam ~ Happy Friday!

Making A Bucket List Stretches Your Imagination

There are many different ways to achieve big-picture, long-term goals, as well as smaller, short-term goals, but one of my favorite techniques is the "bucket list"... also known as "my life list."

In the movie, The Bucket List, characters played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman head off on a road trip living out a wish list of what they want to do before they die. They do things like skydiving, go on an African safari and climb the pyramids at Giza. (By the way, I highly recommend this movie. It's hilarious and, ultimately, very touching.)

ParaglidingI started a bucket list in 2010 - yes, I know, it took me long enough to get around to doing one! When my only child moved away to college in the fall of 2011, it got me to wondering. I had already written a list of where I'd like to visit if I could go anywhere in the world, but what else would I like to DO. I added activities like paragliding, riding the Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad and writing/publishing at least one best-selling book.

Speaking of best-selling books, Canfield and Hansen, the authors of Chicken Soup for the Soul, share how John Goddard wrote 127 life goals when he was 15, which he called “My Life List.” His list includes things like climbing famous mountains, circumnavigating the globe (4 times), running a mile in 5 minutes, and reading the complete works of Shakespeare. By his mid-60’s, Goddard had achieved 108 of his goals. Now, that is very cool!

The act of making & checking off lists is very empowering. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and helps keep your momentum strong. Making lists is the main technique many of us use to get things done on a day-to-day basis. But, making a bucket list really stretches your imagination. It gives you an even larger sense of accomplishment and confidence when you check off those items.

Do you have a bucket list? And, if so, what's on yours?

Your Potential And Your Power

Did you know that 81% of Americans say that they have the dream of writing a book?

Having written and published one book already, I am confident that anyone who desires it can do it. Every single person in that 81% has the potential.

The Definition Of Potential
I did a Google search for the meaning of “potential” and brought up this generally accepted definition – “latent qualities or abilities that may be developed and lead to future success or usefulness.”

Merriam Webster Online says it’s “something that can develop or become actual.”

And I especially like this one from the freedictionary.com – “Having possibility, capability, or power.” Interestingly, “power,” according to freedictionary.com, is the “ability or capacity to do something.”

So, obviously, “potential” and “power” both have to do with capability. You have the power or capability to reach your potential. You have the potential or capability to reach your power.

Basic Human Fears
But what is holding you back from reaching your potential and your power?

It might be a lack of personal discipline, true. And I have found that it takes passion along with a dose of ordered thinking to truly be disciplined. But I’m guessing at the core of it all, it’s really some sort of fear that holds you back from going for it... whatever that IT is for you.

Below are the big 3 - the main emotional fears all humans have in common. See if any or all of these ring true for you.

Fear of being rejected or being unloveable...

Fear of being misunderstood...

Fear of betrayal, disrespect, injustice...

What is holding you back from reaching your potential and your power?

  • Maybe you’re afraid your emotional needs won’t be met when you try to reach your potential and your power.
  • Maybe you’re afraid that your basic survival needs won’t be met.
  • Maybe you’re afraid that your lifestyle will be too dramatically affected.
  • Maybe you’re afraid of what your tribe will think of you or how they will be impacted.

… And the list goes on…

Dandelion

What's The Worst That Can Happen?
Have you ever gone through the mental inquiry process that some like to call the “what’s the worst that can happen game”?

I have, and I’m glad I did. It helped me to realize a dream – it helped me face and let go of my fear of allowing my writing to be seen by all.

In the U.S., we are blessed with the freedom of expression, and yet I was still afraid to freely express myself. I was worried about what others would think of what I wanted to say. When I challenged myself to think of the worst thing that could happen if someone didn’t like what I had to say, I had to admit that the worst that could happen in another country where freedoms aren’t assured… or in another time when I would be burned or hanged for exploring even slightly off-center concepts… would not happen to me. The worst thing that could happen is that if someone didn’t like what I said, they would very likely just ignore me.

I tested the waters by starting to post articles to my blog. I couldn’t help notice that no one burst in to drag me away to a dark dungeon. Instead, people started telling me that they liked what I wrote! So rather than the “worst that could happen” happening, quite the opposite happened. Not only did they like my writing, they actually paid for it when I published my book.

Today, I continue to stretch and grow. It’s extremely satisfying to realize a dream. It leads you to dream some more and then some more. Every day, I challenge myself to reach more of my potential and tap into more of my personal power. And that has led me into writing my second book, which will be out in early 2012.

Potential and Self-Actualization
Previously, I mentioned that one of the definitions of potential describes it as something that can become actual. I can see how this means taking something from an idea and making it a reality… making it actual. But I would also like to think of this as reaching the top of Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Pyramid, which is where he placed the need to become self-actualized. To reach my own potential, I need to become actual-ized.

Like everyone, I have experienced, and continue to experience, all of the other needs mentioned – the need to be loved, the need for justice, the need to preserve my lifestyle, etc. – but, as Maslow suggested, I have the need to become self-actualized, too. Guess, for me, that need outweighs the fears now because when I hit my 30’s some time ago, I remember thinking that 3 decades of letting fear keep me small was quite long enough. More than a decade later my life is much bigger, and my other needs have been met and even exceeded. And so I look forward to stretching it bigger than this.

What is holding you back from reaching your potential and your power?
Maybe you have a dream that keeps nagging at you in the back of your mind, but you brush it away like a gnat – it keeps tugging at your heart, but you push it down until rises up for air again.

Ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen if you acted on your dream? And then ask yourself what’s the opposite of that?

Then go for it. Reach for your potential, reach for your power. You have the capability.

Poem: I have a premonition...

I've been reading a great little motivational book - it was a gift from one of the co-authors, Billy Moyer, co-founder and president of SOS Leadership Institute.  It's called Seeds of Success: A Journey from Success to Significance.

In the book, there's a lovely poem (author unknown)... a sort of wish for or blessing on another.  I just had to pass it along!

Silvered Wing

I have a premonition that soars on silvered wings,
A dream of your accomplishments
and other wondrous things,
I do not know beneath what sky
Or where you'll challenge fate,
I only know it will be high,
I only know you will be GREAT!

Tallan Latz Is Making His Dreams Come True

When Tallan Noble Latz was 5 years old, he was watching guitarist great, Joe Satriani, perform on television. He turned to his dad and said, "Dad, this is exactly what I want to do." Dad obliged and upgraded him from the acoustic guitar, that he'd had since he was 4, to electric.

Tallen showed remarkable talent early on. In fact, he was featured in a local news story at age 8 in which he claimed to idolize Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. Also, in that news story, he announced his personal mission statement, "I like to put smiles on people's faces when they're having a bad day." When asked about his future 5 and 10 year goals, he readily rattled off several, including making CDs and doing music tours.

Wouldn't it be cool if all of us could be so absolutely sure of our career goals at age 8?!

Tallan continued playing, later making an appearance on America's Got Talent when he was 9, which earned him a standing ovation. And now, at 12 years old, he wows audiences whenever he plays with famous blues guitarists like Walter Trout (check out the video below), as well as the likes of Jackson Browne and Les Paul. His dreams and goals are coming true.

Yesterday, I spent some time watching You Tube videos featuring "The T-Man," amazed at how self-confident and talented this young man is. Anyone who knows me well, knows that my favorite kind of music is the blues, so I got a kick out of seeing him play so many of the songs that I love. And I thought, "Now, this is truly inspiring. I need to post something about him." I didn't realize it until I checked out Wikipedia this morning - it's The T-Man's birthday today.

Happy Birthday, T-Man! May your dreams and goals continue to come true - rock on!

Peace of Mind

While I was driving around in my car this weekend, this great old song came on the radio. If you like classic rock like I do, then you probably know and appreciate this one a lot. The tune itself is very uplifting, but, hey, have you ever paid attention to the lyrics? Thought-provoking...

http://youtu.be/Ek8ejHBZ1uo

Peace of Mind by Boston

Now if you're feelin' kinda low 'bout the dues you've been paying
Future's coming much too slow
And you wanna run but somehow you just keep on stayin'
Can't decide on which way to go
Yeah, yeah, yeah

I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.

Now you're climbin' to the top of the company ladder
Hope it doesn't take too long
Can'tcha you see there'll come a day when it won't matter
Come a day when you'll be gone

I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.

Take a look ahead, take a look ahead, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...

Now everybody's got advice they just keep on givin'
Doesn't mean too much to me
Lot's of people out to make-believe they're livin'
Can't decide who they should be.

I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.

Take a look ahead, take a look ahead. Look ahead.

Personal Growth: Give Your Mind Jobs To Do

There is a duality in this realm where we live. There's a beginning and an ending. There's light and dark, female and male, joy and sorrow... positive and negative.

There is a duality in your mind or ego as well. There's a positive force and a negative force. I don't mean negative as in "bad." (Ah, there's that duality concept again... good and bad!) It's the negative side of the mind/ego which has truly enabled humankind to survive. This was especially important when we were less civilized and, therefore, hung out further down the food chain on a regular basis. Can you imagine what it must have been like to be stalked by a saber-toothed tiger?!

If not for fear, we would fall into danger constantly. And when in physical danger, you bet I would prefer to have that prickling sensation of fear sending impulses of alert energy all over my body. Thank goodness for the fight or flight response!

So fear has it's role - and it's a very important one. But what happens when it crosses over into your life in other ways? Like when the positive side of your mind/ego is pulling you to grow and expand?

The duality of the mind/ego might go like this...
Positive: I'm eager to go for it and attain that over there. It's my calling!

Negative: But that's dangerous because it requires leaving the safety of the pack. What I've always done has kept me out of danger so far.

Positive: True, but don't you feel the pull to grow and move in that direction over there? It's so exciting - that's destiny over there.

Negative: Yes, I do, and that's what scares me. I'm afraid of leaving here. Some others who have left the pack have been persecuted and even killed! I want to be loved. I want to belong. I'm afraid of being unfairly judged... and maybe even dying. What if...?

Positive: Fear is strong. But these are stories made up. It's not reality - only the imagination of illusion. I want to be courageous, and I know I am loved by Source. I am of Source, and so I trust the calling.

Negative: Well, I don't. And how do you know there is even such a thing as a "Source"? If you can't touch it, see it, hear it, feel it, how do you know it exists?

Which one wins?

As you can see, the negative side helps humankind survive, the positive side helps humankind thrive. Can't do this human thing without both sides, but you can't progress if you stay at a stalemate either.

Jobs To Do How do you move forward?
I've learned that it's best to acknowledge what the negative side of my mind/ego is telling me. Doesn't mean I have to always obey it - just pay attention to it. In fact, when I acknowledge this part of me, I calm down. Being calm allows me to consciously channel the energy of that fear into a more constructive response... such as planning a more comfortable and less risky approach to reaching my goal.

Use your mind/ego for the tool it is, and direct it toward more helpful tasks. Give it jobs to do like:

  • Imagining what it will be like once you've expanded your options.
  • Watching for the signs that what you're doing is working.
  • Analyzing and researching resources needed.

David Schwartz says in his book, The Magic of Thinking Big: “Success isn’t determined by the size of one’s brain, it’s determined by the size of one’s thinking.”

Guess what? This is how you increase the size of your thinking... by exercising it.

Attitude - YOU Can Always Change It

Personal Power

Choose Your Attitude
“We who lived in the concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: The last of his freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” – Viktor Frankl, holocaust survivor and author of Man’s Search for Meaning

Stay Open to the Possibilities
It’s been said that Henry Ford went broke 5x before he finally succeeded. He stayed open to the possibilities, which served him well. Ford observed how the meat processing and packing industry in Chicago used an overhead assembly line process. Each butcher along the line made individual special cuts as the beef carcasses passed by. Ford and his efficiency experts figured out how to adapt this process to the production of cars, and reduced the assembly time for a Model T chassis by half.

When you woke up this morning, what attitude did you choose? It's your attitude that let's you see the possibilities. Are you exercising an open mind and open heart when walking through your day?

If you don't like your attitude, YOU can always change it.

Once you do, then sit back and watch what happens.  You'll be amazed at all the possibilities you'll start to notice.

Now, that's true personal power!

"Whatever you habitually think yourself to be, that you are." Wallace D. Wattles, from his book, The Science of Being Great

Fashion Clothing Company, White House Black Market, Honors Breast Cancer Survivors

In May, my daughter turned 18 and started working for a clothing store called White House Black Market. She was so excited to get the job... it's been one of her favorite places to shop for some time.

Sixth Birthday My little one, who's all grown up now, has always loved clothes. She never really played with baby dolls. Instead, she focused all her doll energy on dressing up Barbie and friends. Once she was old enough to choose her own wardrobe, she went through a phase in which she would wear nothing but dresses. And any chance she got, she would pretend to be a princess. In fact, here she is on her 6th birthday wearing her princess tiara. No doubt about it, my kiddo likes being a girl.

Ever since she started working at White House Black Market, my daughter has shared her excitement about being able to dress up real women as a stylist... as well as mannequins in the window.

Often, she talks about how the attitude of a customer is transformed when trying on a flattering outfit, and, feeling beautiful, the customer starts to beam. She also enjoys when husbands come into the store with their wives - she can't help but observe the way the woman appears to feel so good about herself when the instant makeover gets the husband's rapt attention and admiring comments.

So, naturally, I already had the impression my daughter senses that her work has more meaning than "just dressing people up," and then she sent me an email last week that convinced me she knows it has more meaning. In her note, was this video link below (7:21) and the comment, "Pretty cool video from 2010, that makes me proud to work for WH|BM and represent these wonderful survivors."

I simply had to share it here - it's very inspiring. And, if you haven't noticed already, I'm pretty proud of the way my daughter's grown up to see the real beauty beyond the external trappings.

College Graduate Defies The Odds

Recipient of a heart transplant when she was an infant, Lauren Aggen wrote a book called Austin's Gift to thank the family whose baby son died of SIDS and donated his heart.  She recently graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

She says, "The challenges have helped make me the strong person I am today."

Here's the story about her as featured on her local news station...  prepare to be inspired!

Saluting Women over 50 – There Is No Age Limit On Accomplishment

Yesterday, I participated in the Texas Women In Business (TWIB) conference in Austin, TX.  This all-day event was focused on supporting women 50 and over who are going through career transition.  Whether it was entrepreneurship, going back to school, starting a creative career or finding a job, there were educational tracks for everyone.

I happily volunteered my time to give presentations to those seeking job search advice and then moderated a wonderful HR Experts panel made up of Scott Buchholtz of Citizens Insurance, Diontha Fancher of St. Jude Medical, Pam Fisher of The Boone Group and Allison Jenkins of Senior Work Solutions.

World in her hands The keynote speaker at lunch was Anita Perry, first lady of Texas.  I just loved her presentation because she pointed out the successful careers of powerful women over the age of 50.

Ms. Perry specifically drew attention to Helen Mirren, who at age 63 sported a red bikini during her vacation on an Italian beach in 2008.  Probably photographed by some paparazzi following her, she looked absolutely fabulous in those candid shots.

Another famous actress who Ms. Perry brought to our attention is the funny and adorable Betty White.  Wow, can you believe it?  Betty White is 89!  I watched her on the Mary Tyler Moore show in the 1970’s and just looked it up… she was in her 50’s when she did that show.  She has been honored with industry awards many times in her career, including the 2011 Screen Actors Guild and Gracie Allen Awards for the sitcom, Hot in Cleveland.

Finally, Ms. Perry, mentioned one of her “favorite heroines” who is also one of mine, Margaret Thatcher.  Margaret Thatcher became the UK’s first female prime minister at age 54.  Ms. Perry repeated one my favorite Thatcher quotes ever:  “Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't.”

By the way, Ms. Perry is an accomplished woman of over 50 herself.  I never knew this, but Anita Perry worked as a nurse for 17 years.  She created the annual Texas Conference for Women in 2000, and, even though she holds degrees from West Texas A&M (formerly West Texas State) and UT San Antonio, Texas Tech University renamed its nursing school in her honor in 2008.

Thanks, Ms. Perry, for reminding us of these wonderful role models who show us that there’s no age limit on accomplishment.
